You might be wondering, “how does a leadership book written by a retired oil executive relate to me and my industry?” We thought you might ask that question, so we interviewed professionals who participated in Al’s Applied Leadership Seminars to see how the Applied Leadership Development approach changed their lives. Here’s a small sampling:

Russ Talvi; Restaurant Owner

How did Applied Leadership impact you personally and professionally or what do you refer to on a regular basis?

Talvi: I’ve enjoyed some success owning and operating my own businesses in a past life and currently have designed and implemented a fairly flexible, reduced stress lifestyle. Participating in the Applied Leadership Seminar was a wake up call for me. The course material, self-assessments and Al’s personal coaching have rekindled my passion for self-improvement, personally and professionally. Most importantly, Al challenged me to be a better steward of the gifts I’ve been given and have worked hard to develop for the past several decades. Fairly simple adjustments to my behaviors have already increased my satisfaction and productivity in our organization. Now I’m planning and working towards a more audacious and exciting future!

While many of Al’s stories and examples relate to the oil and gas industry, how does Applied Leadership translate to the restaurant industry?

Talvi: Al’s stories and real world examples are both entertaining and instructive. The leadership traits/skills and challenges he illustrates are transferable from an oil company to a restaurant. Leadership ability is one resource that is rare and renewable and remains a key ingredient in any business’s recipe for success.

What was your biggest takeaway from Applied Leadership?

Talvi: Al’s Applied Leadership course has re-energized me personally and professionally and I’m looking forward to optimizing the next phase of my journey! It seemed glib to say that “Al’s Applied Leadership has changed my life”, but those three days in June and the whack on the side of the head that Al gave me has made all the difference!

Bethany Charlsen; Banking Sector

How did Applied Leadership impact you personally and professionally or what do you refer to on a regular basis?

Charlsen: This seminar transformed me both personally and professionally. Al shared three critical character traits of every great leader – courage, integrity and respect. These resonated with me, so I framed and hung them in my workplace. It’s a constant reminder as I work through my day-to-day activities and shapes my behaviors and decisions.

While many of Al’s stories and examples relate to the oil and gas industry, how does Applied Leadership translate to your industry?

Charlsen: The stories Al shared, while industry-specific, were not leadership-specific. The same concepts and behaviors he exhibited and promoted in his examples and stories are valuable in any workplace today.

What was your biggest takeaway from Applied Leadership?

Charlsen: Relationships are the blood that pumps through the veins of leadership keeping it alive! Every relationship is fueled through conversations (or lack thereof) so each day I challenge myself to have the difficult conversations at work and in my personal life to enrich and strengthen my relationships.
